The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is the story of four tough guys who hijack the #6 train on the New York City Subway and threaten to shoot one hostage every minute until they receive one million dollars in ransom.
So, I went out during lunch to run a few errands. No big deal.
I ended up dropping into the 33rd Street station on Park Avenue to take the 6 train back to my office. The train got there right as I whipped my MetroCard out, so I rushed through the turnstile and jumped in the closest car.
Right when I stepped in, I noticed a guy laying across four or five seats. The first thing I thought was, “What a dick!”
Then, I started thinking, “That guy looks dead!”
He had drool all over his chin and his eyes were open a slit, just enough to see that they were rolled back.
About 15 or 20 seconds passed, and the doors didn’t close. Everybody in the car had a “What the fuck?” look on their face. Then an announcement comes over the speaker: “This train will be delayed a few minutes. There is a sick passenger on the train.”
A couple minutes later, the conductor and a few guys from the NYPD showed up and tried to shake the guy awake. He was out cold, so they slapped him a little. After three or four shots to the face, he came to and the cops hustled him to his feet and out of the subway car.
All along, there was some guy that was shadowing the police officers. After they left the train, he started lecturing to nobody in particular.
“OD… overdose. Damn, that’s sad as fuck. You know, I work in the business. The Rehab Business.” People started moving away from the Expert.
“Looks like he just got out of rehab yesterday and went wild. He probably scored 3 bags and partied all night. Regular users don’t OD, it’s the guys straight out of rehab. Sad as fuck! He shoulda just gotten a 1/2 bag last night.”
Finally, the #6 pulled into the Union Square stop and I hopped off. Back to work.
